Rila mountains
The Rila Mountains in the west of Bulgaria are the highest mountains in the Balkans. The highest top is the Moesala (2925 meters). The national park Rila is located 100 km south of Sofia and is the largest national park of Bulgaria. It includes the highest and most central lain store in the Rila Mountain. In the park hosts a habitat for (rare) wild animals, such as bear, wild hogs, stags, falcons and eagles. There are also several historical cultural places, of which the Rila Monastery (UNESCO) is the most well known. The monument is a characteristic example of the Bulgarian Renaissance (18th–19th centuries) and symbolizes an awareness of a Slavic cultural identity following centuries of occupation.

Borovets is the oldest and largest winter sport area of Bulgaria. It lies 1350 meters above sea level, on the North slopes of the Rila Mountain. Borovets attracts ski tourists with its 18 ski slopes, with a total length of 60 km, and its sociable centre full of fun.
